forget the ear plugs

A team of scientists “were able to produce a group of mutant mice whose hearing had been chemically turned down. These, and a group of regular mice, were exposed to noise levels equivalent to those one might experience at the rhythm-music centred events or gatherings popular among the young of the human race.

“In precise terms, this is a noise level of 100 decibels, well able to cause hearing damage. According to the boffins, the mutated mice whose internal volume knobs had been turned down suffered much less hearing damage from the laboratory rave experience than did the unaltered ones.”

Nasa Pictures

I frequently visit the NASA site to see their picture of the day. I can highly recommend it, some of the images are just amazing and literally I suppose out of this world. Equally surprising are some of the photos from Earth like this one from a cold Latvia.

Can you crack a code?

Try Your Hand at Cryptanalysis

Some of you might fancy a challenge set by the FBI. They've got a competition going:

Last year, we challenged you to crack a code created by the “cryptanalysts” in our FBI Laboratory, who are experts in breaking ciphers of all kinds. Tens of thousands of you did so.

Are you ready for round two? We hope so. But bear in mind, this year's code is slightly more difficult.

Once again: if you want a primer on basic cipher systems and how to break them, see the article “Analysis of Criminal Codes and Ciphers.”

More details here: FBI competition Unfortunately, I wouldn't be very good at this - I can't even find the link for the competition to get started.

welcome to the Index

One of the first things you need to do on launching a website is to check that it works beforehand. I checked and everything seemed to be running ok but what I didn't do is get anyone checking how it functions from the point of view as a user. Looking at the stats for the first two days of p.wiki going live there were 100 visitors. That's great, but what I also realised was that the vast majority of you only saw the pages related to p.storage and p.jit.gl.shader. No surprise perhaps, as that is how I announced it in the Max forums, but only 2 of the visitors looked at the index page for the site, despite me recommending it on the front page! Welcome to the index. Hopefully, discovering the site and navigating is a bit easier now.

Some of the p.wiki stats: In the first two days 101 visitors made 150 visits from 21 countries and downloaded 70 files.

Thanks and call back soon!

p.wiki - coming soon!

You can find various things here related to max, msp and jitter. I think a wiki better suits the things that I want to share with the Max community so I'll gradually move things over from my website and add more over time. If you find them useful in some way then good, if you'd like to contribute in any way then great, that's even better. Please join in :-)

Feel free to add anything you think contributes, be it correcting errors, adding further information, sharing ideas, contributing to making any patches more functional, translations or whatever. I'm open to any sugestions.

The site is fairly open to encourage your involvement and input. I'm hoping that the wiki format will make it easier for you to share your experiences about some of the topics here and perhaps provide a stimulus to add more content covering new ground. The edit buttons you see allow you to add, alter or correct anything written. If you want to ask questions or develop some ideas then use a discussion area. Formatting text can be done with the buttons in the editing area or you can get help on the syntax page.

Let's see how it goes….
